Group lessons for adult beginner harpists
No prior musical experience is needed

Harp and Tea group lessons run in term time, week day mornings, at the Harp Event's studio in Blockhouse Bay, or if you have a group of 4-6 friends who all want to have a try at something new, something musical, and something sociable, we can talk about having the lesson at a home, or a venue of your choice (church, retirement village, library)
Stage One consists of ten group lessons. Each lesson contains a new piece of harp technical work (so you can load up your harp toolbox with new skills) a new piece of music, and a round (something we can all play together and build up into a spontaneous piece of performance fun!) and a chat about all things harp (while we enjoy tea and cake). There is an optional beginner level theory of music homework sheet for those who want a better understanding of music. This is very much recommended and theory and practise work hand in hand.

You can either buy the Harp and Tea Bundle - a wee harp (for you to take home and keep) and ten x 45 min group lessons for $600, or if you have access to a harp of your own, you can just pay for the lessons $250.
Subsequent stages cost $250 for the set of ten group lessons.
If you have your own harp or wish to hire a harp, you can pay for the lessons only.

Lessons taken at the Harp Events Studio will also allow you to see other types of harps that are available, and when the time comes to make your choice of your next harp, you will have sampled a few other harps. Generally harpists will move on to a harp with 30 or 34 strings when they move up to a harp with more strings and levers. While it’s difficult to recommend a harp to buy from the outset of lessons, I will endeavour to inform your of new and second hand harps which are available in the harp community as you get closer to wanting to purchase a harp.

To sum it up again!
What's involved?
Working with groups of 4-6 adult students, we will work through a curriculum of beginner harp music and technique, and if required, beginner music theory also, accompanied by a hot drink and something yummy!
Weekday mornings - 45 mins (allow an hour :-)
Lesson one includes:
Learning to tune your harp, identifying and naming the strings, what to do with our fingers? two little tunes, explaining music jargon, and a bit of music theory. We'll also finish each lesson off with a bit of harp chat - history of harps, harpists, harp music, harp makers, and some resources to further your self directed learning about all things harp.
Subsequent lessons will start with a quick revisit of the previous lesson, and how we all coped with our harping through the week. Optional theory homework is available.
The benefits of learning in a group situation include sharing information, playing in parts, listening to another student's perspective or performance, and socialising with harpists of similar mind and ability. Outside of the lesson, you are more than welcome to chat within the group (we'll set up a platform we can all access for getting more info) and practise with other students.
Costs involved:
The Harp and Tea bundle $600
Your own wee harp (to keep!!)
10x 45 min group harp lessons
Group Lessons $250
10x 45 min group harp lessons only stage 1 & 2 (own harp required)
10x 45 min group harp lessons for the musically experienced (own harp/hire harp required)
For subsequent group lesson or individual lessons, your cardboard harp will be adequate to learn on for around a year. After this point, I will help guide you to buying a harp that will suit you.
When?
Lessons fall approximately into the same shape as the primary/secondary school terms (longer break over summer) and dates will be advised at the start of each course. Next course starting the week of Monday July 19th for 10 weeks.
Where?
Your place or mine? Contact me if you wish to join a ready established class at the Harp Events Studio in Blockhouse Bay, Auckland, or if you have a group at your church, retirement village or other group, we can talk about me coming out to work with you at your venue (you'd have to make the tea!!)
In case of illness or lockdown (or any other as yet unforeseen situation)
We will have a class online - you will be sent a link for the class if you are unwell (and give me notice) or if we are in isolation. Have a read of the lessons online tab as we've had plenty of opportunities in 2020 to get our online lessons honed to perfection.

Each group has chosen how they prefer to communicate for their group chat - email, website, whats app, Facebook, hangouts, so if your group is not in the place you thought it might be... please ask for a link.
