GLISS - Harp Quartet
Thames Music Group, 2pm, Sunday June 13th, 2021.
St Georges Church, Mackay Street Thames
Formed as a six piece harp ensemble in 2016, the current line-up for Gliss is Anna Dunwoodie (director), Laura Robertson and Bronwyn McConchie, all of whom were members of the original line up, and new member, Lucy Makinson.
We've all been passionate about the harp since we were very young - for Anna and Bronwyn, the opportunity to play the harp was not available whereas Laura and Lucy both started harp lessons at 4 .5 years and 5 years respectively. Our favourite music is the pieces we are often surprised to hear arranged for harp – such as themes from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies, or arrangements of Scott Joplin ragtime music. Anything can be played by a quartet of lever harps, but some pieces are definitely more effective than others! We like music that has a few bits of extended harp technique (harmonics, glissandos, pres de la table, percussive effects ) and have a nice interplay between all the harps. From Vivaldi to Faure to Gareth Farr and our own arrangements – we’re excited by a wide range of music and genre and hope you enjoy our music too! |
GLISS - Harp Trio
Rafters Folk Club, 8pm, 21st August 2020
1a Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland
Ever created an ensemble/musical group just because the company is awesome and you are all on the same musical plain??? That's what it is like for us - we just love the sound of three harps together, and can totally put up with hours of playing music together!
Gliss! comprises of Anna Dunwoodie, Bronwyn McConchie and Laura Robertson who have been playing together in any number of different ensembles and groups since.... well... since Laura and Bronwyn started playing the harp .... for Laura... this was when she was 4.5 years old! Busy life and work always get the better of us, so its great to have a regular escape time to come together and make some great sounding trio music - as the saying goes ' there are no bum notes on the harp' which even makes sight-reading new music a pleasure! What do we play? Well, it's not uncommon for the trio to get a YouTube link with a message attached ' how about this one!!!' .... anything from harp jazz and blues, new compositions from contemporary trad/folk composers, Joplin ragtime tunes, a piece from Thomas Moore, Vivaldi, Faure or Elton John... and occasionally a newly composed or arranged tune from one of the three of us! |
