Formed in 2017, the founding members of Gliss are pictured here - Wendy, Kate, Mikaele, Anna, Laura and Bronwyn. (photo - St Matthews in the City)
Directed by Anna Dunwoodie, the ensemble play a wide range of music - from Thomas Tallis, Turlough O'Carolan, and Vivaldi, through to contemporary and modern composers ... Klaus Badelt (and the wonderful rollicking theme music from Pirates of the Caribbean), Vincent Kennedy (composer of The Chronicles of Meath) and NZ composers Gareth Farr (Frozen Landscapes - a three movement musical depiction of his Antarctic experiences). Michelle Velvin, and Anna Dunwoodie. Gliss also plays some jolly Joplin Rags, and is NZ's only group to play a recently composed work (commissioned by the American Harp Society) by Meg Robinson, called "Hope". The suite of short pieces "Dyades" by Bernard Andres is a showcase of the variety of harp techniques - harmonics, xylophonics, pres de la table, glissandos, and percussive effects that can be found on this amazing instrument! All this and more!!! Two full 45 minute sets of music available - though, as we're always learning new music, the content may change!
Gliss have recently condensed down to a four harpist core (with Kate living in Wellington, and both Laura and Mikaele being busy 16 year old students, we have developed a flexibility that suits us all) and can negotiate around events that require all six harpists to be present.
