Raising Funds for The Auckland Women's Centre $20
I think this is an amazing cause to raise funds for - I was a solo mum for 10 years, but I was extremely lucky to have great family support, and an awesome network of friends who helped out at difficult times. I was also self employed, and had the flexibility to be full time mum and work as well. Not all of us are that lucky, so the Auckland Women's Centre needs our help to make up a shortfall of $30,000 of funding. Let's see what we can achieve together, with this awesome group of musicians and our support crew, who have all been working hard to make this come together on May 20th.
It's so incredible to be involved in a project with many other women I have performed with, sat in audiences with, chatted with in queues at festival bathrooms, and it was while waiting in some of those coffee van or bathroom queues in January, that I scoped out potential women to be involved in a project to reflect the world wide women's marches, and displays of peace, unity and bonding. We've all had a chance to bring ideas to the rehearsals, try them out, and keep the best ones.
Personally, I had always wanted to try to form a super group, selecting my favourite musicians to work with together .... this really is the best sort of trouble to be getting into with the girls! World music, traditional music, folk music ... how ever you want to label it, comes with an organic caring/sharing sort of aspect, that lends itself to develop a programme together and make something that is unique to our group of people.
Throughout the whole process, while being a vehicle to show our support for women in general, and more specifically to financially support the Auckland Women's Centre, I have felt it is important to make it clear that we aren't excluding our men folk ... they are just taking a little bit of a sideline for this event. During rehearsals, they have been our chauffeurs, our house band support team, our sound, tech and film guys, our sounding boards, and on the night, they will be all these things, plus those lads in the kitchen keeping the tea and bikkies coming, and the dishes washed. We love having them around us!
I hope we'll see you there to support women, and to support The Auckland Women's Centre on May 20th
